Latin American Conference on Investigative Journalism

15th – 18th August 2009
Hotel Sol de Oro, Lima, Perú

The first edition Of the Latin American Conference on Investigative Journalism has been organized by Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) and Transparency International in Latin America and the Caribbean (TILAC), with the support of the Ford Foundation (FF) and the Open Society Foundation as principal donors.

This initiative’s precedents go back to the year 2002, when the Open Society Foundation supported a TILAC and IPYS joint project destined to achieve a better knowledge of corruption processes in Latin America through the promotion of investigative journalism. The “Prize to the Best Journalistic Investigation of a Case of Corruption in Latin America and the Caribbean” was created with this in mind. It is a one of a kind prize which awards US$ 25 thousand to the winner and - from its second year onwards - two US$ 5 thousand awards for the second and third places. The last seven years saw the constant participation of those media outlets that currently carry out journalistic investigations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

IPYS and TILAC have searched for a space in which to present the best investigative work done in the region for the last three years; this was made possible once funds were obtained that allowed a regional conference to be organized in Lima for August 2009.

The Prize and the Conference are now the main activities for the promotion of investigative journalism in the region.

The authors of last year’s best pieces of investigative journalism will be present at the Conference, along with American and European journalists.

Registered participants will be able to follow the debates live via the internet.
